" For me the most fascinating aspect of abstract painting is that it can be a powerful resource to explore the many hidden layers of human experience that help shape the inner life. To me as an abstract artist all the formal aspects of painting - abstract shapes, brush marks, colours, tones, layers of paint, surface texture, lines etc. become means of making discoveries about the world, contemporary life and the human predicament..
My objective is not to talk about what the material world looks like, but rather to translate my experience of life into abstract poetic imagery.
To me the drama that arises when the abstract elements meet and interact on the canvas becomes a reflection of the fundamental existential drama of contemporary life – a floating, continuously changing process rather than something static or unequivocal. Each pictorial element, in its interaction with all other elements, becomes an organic entity, inviting the multiplicity of associations inherent in all human experience." Eva Ryn Johannissen 2006

About myself :

I was born in Sweden in 1945, but have lived abroad for many years (Switzerland, France, England). I received most of my artistic training in France and England. In 2003 I moved from Buckinghamshire, England to Uppsala, Sweden, but continue to exhibit internationally.

Education :

. Fil. mag. (MA) University of Uppsala, Sweden
. BA (hons) Fine Art, Buckinghamshire Chilterns University, England
. Post graduate diploma in printmaking, West Hertfordshire College, England
. Studied life drawing and painting at Scultura and Artworks Art Centre in Provence, France for four years

About my work :

I like to build up my paintings in layer upon layer.
I love to spread thin washes of paint with a wide household brush and let it run across the canvas; I relish the sensual experience of spreading the luscious oil paint with the palette knife or using a rag to rub thick paint into the canvas.
After that it is an almost voluptuous torture to wash away exquisite layers of half-dry paint or to scrape it off with the knife in order to expose the layers underneath.
All the time I am searching to uncover hidden thoughts, emotions and truths.
When starting on a new painting I usually have only a rather loose idea of the finished piece, but as soon as I get started the work takes on a life of its own with its own history and its own future.
Each brush stroke builds on the one that preceded it.
